Are the employees in your small business saying they need more work/life balance? Here's what to tell them.
1) "Forget Work Life Balance: It doesn't exist. There is only life, and I'm giving you the flexibility to arrange it to your liking. All I care about is that you deliver the results required for the success of the business. I don't care if it takes you 12 hours or 6, and I don't care if you get it done at 10am on a Tuesday or 3am on a Sunday, as long as it's done and done well."
2) "Focus on personal performance improvement: I need you to look after yourself properly, physically and mentally. 90% of “work/life balance issues” can be solved by starting and ending your day positively, eating right, exercising and practicing simple meditation techniques. If you don't know where to start, I'll find the resources to help you. This will make you feel better and help you do an even better job."
3) "Good life management is not optional: Working yourself into the ground is as unacceptable to me as doing shoddy work or any other behavior that would harm our business performance. Yes there will be periods where we all have to push ourselves to the limit. But I will make sure you have the opportunity to recover."
Obviously, some businesses will find these tips easier to implement consistently than others, but the principles are universal.
